Caption editor for Story Videos

Story Videos can display animated captions that keep each word in sync with the narration. Captions are burned into the MP4 — they are rendered as part of every frame, so they appear on every player and platform with no extra setup.

Auto-generated captions

When you add a caption layer in the Video Studio, the text is auto-generated from the scene narration. You do not have to type out the transcript; the words and their timings are derived automatically from the audio.

Once the captions appear in the inspector panel on the right, you can edit them.

Editing caption text and timing

The Words & timing section in the caption inspector lists every caption line. Each row shows:

  • The line text — click on it and type to correct a word or phrase. Press Enter or click away to save.
  • The in and out times (e.g. 0:01.4–0:03.1) — click the timestamp to expand timing controls.

Adjusting timing

When a row is expanded you can:

  • Type a time directly in the in or out field (format m:ss.s).
  • Nudge by 100 ms using the up/down arrows next to each field.
  • Snap to playhead — position the playhead in the preview, focus the field you want to move (in or out), then click to playhead. The boundary jumps to the current playhead position.

Changes take effect immediately and can be undone with Cmd/Ctrl + Z.

Caption animation styles

The Caption style section offers three animation styles:

Style

How it works

Colored

Each word is shown in the idle text color; the currently spoken word switches to the highlight color.

Scaling

The currently spoken word pulses slightly larger; highlight color is also applied.

Background

Words appear on a colored pill/background that moves with the active word.

Click a style button to switch instantly — the preview on the canvas updates live.

Customising the look

Font

Six fonts are available in the Font section:

  • Oswald (default)
  • Anton
  • Bebas Neue
  • Inter
  • Bangers
  • Permanent Marker

Click a font name to apply it immediately.

Size

Drag the slider in the Size section to set the maximum font size. The range is 32 to 160. Long caption lines will shrink below the cap to fit within the frame; shorter lines render at the full size you set.

Colors

The Colors section adapts to the active style:

Color field

When it appears

Text

Always — the base/idle word color

Highlight (active word)

Colored and Scaling styles only

Outline

Always — the stroke drawn around each letter

Background pill

Background style only

Click a color swatch to open the color picker and choose any hex color.

Captions are burned into the final MP4

Captions are composited directly onto each video frame before export. This means:

  • No separate subtitle file is produced.
  • Captions cannot be toggled off by the viewer after the video is exported.
  • If you want a version with different caption styling — or no captions at all — adjust the settings in the studio and re-render the video.
