Free and paid character slots

ComicInk gives every issue 5 free character slots. Characters added beyond that cost 10 credits each.

How it works

When you add a character to an issue:

1st through 5th character: free. No credit cost to add or regenerate the avatar.
6th character and beyond: costs 10 credits. The character is flagged as a "paid slot" and counts toward this issue's character roster.
Regenerating the avatar of a paid-slot character: still free (avatar regenerations are always free).
Regenerating pages that include a paid-slot character: costs the normal page rate (25 credits) — same as any page.

Why a limit?

Each character adds a visual reference that gets passed to the AI when generating a page that includes them. More characters mean more reference images for the AI to balance, which slows generation and increases compute cost. The 5-character free quota covers most stories; the 10-credit price for the 6th+ keeps the platform sustainable for long-roster issues.

Sharing characters across issues in the same series

Characters defined in a series are available to all its issues. The free-slot count applies per issue, not per series — so if your protagonist appears in issues 1, 2, and 3, they count as one of the 5 free slots in each issue (15 free uses across the three issues).

What if I run out of free slots and don't want to pay?

Two options:

Reuse existing characters — most stories can run on a tight cast. Combine "the bartender"

Editing dialogue and narration

Each panel has editable text fields:

Dialogue — what characters say (rendered in speech bubbles)
Narration — captions, scene-setting text, internal thoughts (rendered in caption boxes)
Character assignment — which of your defined characters appear in this panel

Editing these fields is free — no credit cost — when the dialogue and narration is overlay text (the typical case in ComicInk: speech bubbles and captions are positioned by the editor, not burned into the underlying art).

How to edit

In the issue editor (the flipbook view), click any panel. You'll see editable fields for that panel:

Type new dialogue or narration
Change which characters are in the panel
Add or remove a panel from the page (changing the panel count regenerates the page art and does cost 25 credits)
Save your edit

Changes appear immediately in the flipbook view.

What about text in the image itself?

Some text is generated into the page image — for example, a sign on a wall, a newspaper headline visible in the panel, or a chalkboard. This is "in-image text" and is part of the rendered art.

To change in-image text, you need to regenerate the page or panel — 25 credits. The new prompt should specify what the in-image text should now read.

The same applies to translations: when you translate an issue to another language, in-image text is regenerated in the target language, and that's where the 25-credit translation

Failed generations and refunds

There are two refund situations: generation refunds (automatic) and purchase refunds (manual, for billing issues).

Generation refunds (automatic)

If a page, panel, cover, or translation fails to generate, your credits are refunded automatically. You don't need to do anything.

A generation can fail for a few reasons:

Content moderation — the synopsis, panel description, or character description triggered a safety filter. The generation is rejected before any compute is spent. Edit the offending text and try again.
Timeout — the generation took longer than ~10 minutes. Rare. The system marks it failed and refunds.
Model error — the underlying image model occasionally errors out (especially during high-traffic periods). The system catches the error, refunds, and you can retry.

Refunds are idempotent — if a job fails, the refund happens exactly once even if multiple internal retries happen behind the scenes.

You'll see your balance restored in the credit counter shortly after the failure (usually within seconds).

When you don't get a refund

Generations that succeeded but you don't like the result are not refundable. The compute happened; the result is yours. If the page is bad:

Regenerate it (25 credits) — see regenerating images.
Edit the text instead of regenerating the image (free, if dialogue is overlay text).
Adjust the synopsis or panel description and regenerate.

Edit the series title, genre, theme, or art style (changes apply to new issues, not existing ones)
Manage shared characters, worlds, and assets that get reused across the series

Click an issue to open the flipbook editor:

Each page renders as a flipbook page on the right.
Click any panel to edit dialogue, narration, or regenerate the panel.
The right side shows assigned characters and the scene's context.

Series, Issues, Pages, Panels — what each means

ComicInk uses a four-level content hierarchy that mirrors how real comic books are organized.

Series

A series is a collection of issues that share a world, characters, and art style — like Spider-Man (1963) or Saga. When you create a series, you set:

Title and description
Genre and theme
Art style (one of 12 styles)
Default language
Comic size (standard / manga / graphic novel / webcomic)

Each issue you create inside a series inherits these defaults but can override them.

Issues

An issue is a single self-contained story — like issue #1, issue #2, etc. Each issue has its own pages, characters, and synopsis. Issues can also exist on their own without a parent series ("standalone issues" — useful for one-shots).

Issues are where most of the work happens: writing the story, designing characters, generating pages, picking a cover.

You can also link issues into a story arc — a multi-issue narrative across two or more issues. Story arcs let the AI carry context (who's who, what just happened) from one issue into the next.

Pages

A page is a single page of the comic — what the reader flips to. Each page is a generated image with a layout of one or more panels.

Publishing and sharing your comic

Until you publish an issue, only you (and any collaborators) can see it. Publishing makes the issue readable at a public URL, lets you share it on social, and makes it eligible for the public gallery.

Publishing is free — no credit cost.

How to publish

In the issue editor, click Publish. The issue gets:

A public slug in the URL (e.g., comicink.ai/read/maya-and-the-neon-gate)
A reader page with the flipbook viewer
Reactions and comments enabled
Open Graph and metadata for clean social sharing
Discovery in the gallery (if eligible — see below)

The public URL

Every published issue is at comicink.ai/read/<slug>. The slug comes from the issue title. You can re-publish with edits any time — the URL stays the same.

If you have a storefront with a custom domain, your published issues also appear there at your custom domain.

Sharing on social

Sharing the URL on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Discord, Bluesky, etc. shows a preview card with:

The cover image
The title and a short description
Your creator name

This is generated from the issue's metadata and cover. If you regenerate the cover after publishing, social previews update once those platforms re-crawl the link (varies by platform — usually a few minutes to a few hours).
