Series, Issues, Pages, Panels — what each means

ComicInk uses a four-level content hierarchy that mirrors how real comic books are organized.

Series

A series is a collection of issues that share a world, characters, and art style — like Spider-Man (1963) or Saga. When you create a series, you set:

Title and description
Genre and theme
Optional Setting — era and cultural context (e.g. "Late Victorian London, 1880s") that drives period-appropriate AI image generation
Art style (one of 12 styles)
Default language
Comic size (standard / manga / graphic novel / webcomic)

Each issue you create inside a series inherits these defaults but can override them.

Issues

An issue is a single self-contained story — like issue #1, issue #2, etc. Each issue has its own pages, characters, and synopsis. Issues also have an optional Setting field that overrides the series-level Setting for that one issue (useful for time-travel arcs or anthology series). Issues can also exist on their own without a parent series ("standalone issues" — useful for one-shots).

Issues are where most of the work happens: writing the story, designing characters, generating pages, picking a cover.

You can also link issues into a story arc — a multi-issue narrative across two or more issues. Story arcs let the AI carry context (who's who, what just happened) from one issue

Converting a book PDF into a comic series

If you have a novel or short story in PDF form, you can hand it to ComicInk and have it lay out a complete multi-issue comic series for you. The conversion does two things: it analyzes the whole book to set up the series structure (characters, issue split, per-issue previews), AND it splits the actual book pages into chunks so each issue's later script generation faithfully adapts that issue's pages — preserving original dialogue, settings, and key story beats — instead of inventing a new story from a short summary.

You still click Generate Script issue-by-issue afterwards, and you still need to attest that you own the rights to the book before converting.

How it works

From your dashboard, click Convert Book.
Choose a PDF (up to 50 MB).
ComicInk reads the PDF and shows you a preview: book length, estimated cost in credits, and a suggested issue split (for example, 5 issues × 14 pages each).
Adjust the split if you want — anywhere from 1 issue × 5 pages all the way up to 12 issues × 30 pages each.
Pick the art style for the series. The series language is auto-detected from the book's prose (a French novel produces a French comic by default; a Spanish novel produces a Spanish comic, etc.) — you can override it later in the series settings if you'd rather have the comic in a different language.
Confirm the copyright attestation (you wrote it, you own the rights, or it's in the public domain).
Click Convert to confirm. Credits are charged

Free and paid character slots

ComicInk gives every issue 5 free character slots. Characters added beyond that cost 10 credits each.

How it works

When you add a character to an issue:

1st through 5th character: free. No credit cost to add or regenerate the avatar.
6th character and beyond: costs 10 credits. The character is flagged as a "paid slot" and counts toward this issue's character roster.
Regenerating the avatar of a paid-slot character: still free (avatar regenerations are always free).
Regenerating pages that include a paid-slot character: costs the normal page rate (50 credits) — same as any page.

Why a limit?

Each character adds a visual reference that gets passed to the AI when generating a page that includes them. More characters mean more reference images for the AI to balance, which slows generation and increases compute cost. The 5-character free quota covers most stories; the 10-credit price for the 6th+ keeps the platform sustainable for long-roster issues.

Sharing characters across issues in the same series

Characters defined in a series are available to all its issues. The free-slot count applies per issue, not per series — so if your protagonist appears in issues 1, 2, and 3, they count as one of the 5 free slots in each issue (15 free uses across the three issues).

What if I run out of free slots and don't want to pay?

Two options:

Reuse existing characters — most stories can run on a tight cast. Combine "the bartender"

Creating new content

New Series — start a new multi-issue series. You'll pick a title, genre, art style, and language. See series and issues.
New Issue — create a standalone issue (no parent series).

Inside a series

Click any series to open its detail page. From there you can:

Add new issues (each issue is a self-contained story)
Edit the series title, genre, theme, or art style (changes apply to new issues, not existing ones)
Manage shared characters, worlds, and assets that get reused across the series

Inside an issue

Click an issue to open the flipbook editor:

Each page renders as a flipbook page on the right.
Click any panel to edit dialogue, narration, or regenerate the panel.
The right side shows assigned characters and the scene's context.

Content policy and what we can't generate

ComicInk runs content moderation on every prompt — synopsis, character description, panel description, story input. Some content is automatically rejected before any compute runs. Some is your responsibility as the creator.

What's blocked automatically

The platform's safety system blocks content in two layers:

A keyword filter that catches unambiguous sexual or harmful terms.
The OpenAI Moderation API that catches nuanced sexual or harmful content the keyword filter misses.

When a prompt is blocked, you'll see an error and no credits are deducted — the rejection happens before any image generation.

Specifically rejected

Sexual content (graphic sexual descriptions, nudity in sexual contexts).
Sexual content involving minors — zero tolerance, in any framing.
Graphic violence — extreme gore, torture, mutilation in detail.
Hate speech — content targeting groups by race, religion, gender, sexuality, etc.
Self-harm or suicide content in promotional or instructive framing.
Real public figures in defamatory or sexual contexts.

What's allowed

Mature themes — implied violence, action, conflict, drama. Comics about war, crime, abuse-survival, mental illness — all fine when handled non-graphically.
Mild violence — fight scenes, action, weaponry, suspense.
Romance and intimacy — kissing, attraction, romantic tension. Anything more explicit gets blocked.

Editing dialogue and narration

Each panel has editable text fields:

Dialogue — what characters say. Dialogue is per character: each character on the panel gets their own input. If two characters speak in the same panel (the typical back-and-forth case), each one's line is captured separately so you can rewrite them independently.
Narration — narrator captions, scene-setting text, and internal monologue (rendered in rectangular caption boxes, not speech bubbles). Narration is panel-wide, not per-character.
Character assignment — which of your defined characters appear in this panel. Adding a character here makes a new dialogue field for them.

Editing these fields is free — no credit cost — when the dialogue and narration is overlay text (the typical case in ComicInk: speech bubbles and captions are positioned by the editor, not burned into the underlying art).

How to edit (web)

In the issue editor (the flipbook view), hover any page and click the Edit button (or use the Edit ▾ menu in the ribbon and pick Edit Script). The editor opens with one row per character on the panel:

Each character has their own dialogue line
Type or rewrite each character's line independently
Add a character via the dropdown — a new dialogue field appears for them
Remove a character via the X — their dialogue clears with them
Edit the narration field separately for narrator captions
Add or remove a panel from the page (changing the panel count regenerates the page art and **
