# The Advanced Script Editor

The Advanced Script Editor is the **Script** view of the comic workspace — the way you write and manage an entire issue's script. Instead of editing one panel at a time in a standalone modal, you see every page and panel as one continuous, editable document — with a sidebar for jumping between pages and managing your cast and assets — alongside a persistent [Sidekick](https://help.comicink.ai/en/article/sidekick-your-ai-collaborator-1dct3ek/) chat column.

It's the single, canonical script surface: every "edit this page's script" entry point in the editor — the Tools rail's **Edit Script**, an unrendered page's **Edit Page Script**, or clicking the pencil/**Script** button on a rendered page — opens the Advanced Editor and scrolls to the relevant page.

**On web only.** The Advanced Script Editor is a web feature. On iOS, edit panels through the panel sheet — see [Editing dialogue and narration](https://help.comicink.ai/en/article/editing-dialogue-and-narration-w6qfxa/).

## Opening it

From the workspace:

- Click **Edit Script** in the left **Tools** rail.
- Click the centred **Script** side of the **Script ⇄ Comic** toggle.
- On an unrendered page's placeholder (Comic view), click **Edit Page Script** — this jumps to the Script view scrolled to that page.
- On a rendered page (Comic view), click the pencil **Script** button — same effect.

To leave, switch the toggle back to **Comic**. Nothing is lost; the editor saves as you go (see Autosave below).

## The layout

The Script view sits inside the workspace, alongside the same left rail and right-hand [Sidekick](https://help.comicink.ai/en/article/sidekick-your-ai-collaborator-1dct3ek/) column you see everywhere else in the editor:

- A **left sidebar** with three collapsible sections — **Pages**, **Cast**, and **Assets**. Only one is open at a time; click a section's title to open it (the others collapse so all three stay in view).
- The **document** in the middle — your cover and back cover (collapsible settings panels), your pages and panels (top to bottom, all editable in place).
- **Sidekick** as a persistent column on the right (a slide-in overlay under 900px, along with the left rail).

### Cover and Back Cover

The Cover section appears at the top of the document, even for brand-new comics with no pages yet. The Back Cover section appears at the bottom. Both are collapsible panels where you can edit:

- Scene text or instructions that guide the generation
- Which characters to feature and which of their looks to use
- Reference images to guide the AI
- (Front cover only) Toggles for whether the series title, issue number, or issue title render on the cover

Cover settings autosave automatically as you edit. To **generate** the cover image after editing settings, switch to the **Comic** view and click Generate. You can also ask [Sidekick](https://help.comicink.ai/en/article/sidekick-your-ai-collaborator-1dct3ek/) to adjust cover settings — for example, "put Maya on the front cover" or "hide the issue number".

### Pages

The Pages section lists every page in the issue (`P01 · 6 panels`, and so on). The page you've scrolled to is highlighted.

- **Jump to a page** — click its row and the document scrolls to it.
- **Reorder pages** — drag a page by its **⠿** grip and drop it where you want. Pages renumber automatically.
- **Add a page** — click the **+** in the Pages header. The new page is inserted **right after the page you're currently on**, and the document scrolls to it.
- **Delete a page** — click the **✕** on its row. An issue always keeps at least one page.

### Cast and Assets

The Cast section lists the issue's characters, each with a color that also marks that character's cues throughout the script (speaker labels and cast chips), so a character reads in one consistent color everywhere. The Assets section lists your comic's [assets](https://help.comicink.ai/en/article/reusable-assets-1l4rmko/) (props, vehicles, and other recurring objects).

Click the **+** in either section header to add a new character or asset — this opens the same creation form used elsewhere in the editor, and the new character or asset generates its reference image just as it would there. Newly added items appear in the sidebar right away.

## Editing a panel

Each panel is a card in the document. You can edit, in place:

- **Setting** — the scene heading / location for the panel.
- **Description** — what the panel shows. Type **@** to mention one of your assets and pick it from the list.
- **Caption** — narrator caption or scene-setting text (shown with a colored marker bar).
- **Dialogue** — spoken lines, one per speaker. Click **+ Dialogue** to add a line and choose the speaker; each character keeps their own line — see [editing dialogue and narration](https://help.comicink.ai/en/article/editing-dialogue-and-narration-w6qfxa/) for the per-character rules.
- **Action** — a short stage direction for what happens in the panel.
- **Looks** — for characters that have more than one look (avatar), pick which look appears in this panel.
- **Cast** — the chips at the bottom show which characters are in the panel; **+ Cast** adds one, and the **✕** on a chip removes them.

To add a panel to a page, hover the gap between two panels and click the **+** that appears, or use **+ Add panel** at the end of a page.

## Autosave and undo/redo

- **Autosave** — your changes save automatically a moment after you stop typing. The header shows the status: *Saving…* while it saves, then *All changes saved*. There's no Save button to remember. If you close the editor with an edit still pending, it's flushed before you leave.
- **Undo / redo** — use the **↺** and **↻** buttons in the header, or press **⌘Z** to undo and **⇧⌘Z** (or **⌘Y**) to redo. Undo history covers your current editing session.

## Version history — and getting a script back

Undo covers your current session. **Version history** covers everything before that, and it's what you want after closing the editor, refreshing, or deleting something you meant to keep.

Open it from the editor header. Each entry shows when it was taken and why, and you can preview a version read-only before restoring it — restoring replaces the current script, so it's worth looking first.

Checkpoints are taken automatically:

- **Autosave checkpoints** as you write, grouped so a long typing session doesn't bury older ones.
- **Before a deletion** — taken whenever pages or panels are removed, whether you did it yourself or asked Sidekick to.
- **Before a restore**, so restoring the wrong version is itself undoable.

Deletion checkpoints are kept on their own track, separate from autosaves. That matters in the case people actually hit: deleting every page in an issue. The pre-delete script stays available even if you kept working afterwards, because a burst of autosaves can no longer push it out.

**Artwork is not covered.** Version history restores the *script*. Any rendered images on pages that were deleted or replaced are gone, and restoring the text won't bring them back — you'd re-render, at the usual cost.

## Does it cost credits?

Editing the **script itself** — descriptions, settings, dialogue, captions, action, and reordering pages — does not cost credits. Two things that involve generating art do:

- **Adding a character or asset** generates its reference image — a flat 10 credits, whether it's a create or a later regeneration.
- **Regenerating a page** to reflect structural changes (added, removed, or reordered panels) generates new page art — 50 credits.

Both follow the normal generation costs — see [What costs credits](https://help.comicink.ai/en/article/what-costs-credits-what-doesnt-r9f0sz/).
