# Removing the background from a graphic

**Remove background** cuts the subject out of the current image and makes everything behind it transparent. You get a PNG with no background — ready to drop onto a poster, a thumbnail, a T-shirt mock-up or a slide.

Find it in the Tools rail on the left of the graphic studio, or just ask Sidekick:

> Give me a PNG with no background
> Cut out the character

## It is a cutout, not a redraw

This is the important part. Removing the background **keeps the subject's own pixels exactly as they are**. Nothing is redrawn, reinterpreted or re-imagined — the picture you have is the picture you keep, minus the background.

That makes it different from generating again. A new render produces a *new* picture from a prompt; it cannot edit what is already on screen, so asking for "the same image but with no background" as a render would charge a full render and hand back a different image.

## What it costs

Background removal costs **10 credits**. A full render costs 50, so cutting out an existing image is much cheaper than trying to generate a new one with a plain background.

You are only charged when it works. If it fails, the credits go back.

## Undoing it

The previous image is kept. Open **Version history** in the Tools rail and restore the earlier version — the background comes back exactly as it was.

## When it will not work

You need an image first. On a graphic that has never been generated there is nothing to cut out, and the button stays disabled until you have rendered something.

Very low-contrast subjects — a pale figure against a pale background — can come out with soft or incomplete edges. If the cutout is not clean, restore the previous version from Version history and try rendering the subject against a simpler background first.
