# Generating pages

Each page is a generated image showing one or more panels with characters, dialogue, and action. Generating a page **costs 50 credits**. An issue has between **4 and 36 pages** — see [series, issues, pages, panels](https://help.comicink.ai/en/article/series-issues-pages-panels-what-each-means-x6xhwd/).

## Before you generate

Make sure these are in place — they make the AI's output much better:

1. **Characters defined** with names, descriptions, and avatars. The AI matches characters to panels by name. See [defining characters](https://help.comicink.ai/en/article/defining-characters-1913leo/).
2. **A synopsis** that names those characters and describes what happens. See [writing your story](https://help.comicink.ai/en/article/writing-your-story-19f9gcw/).
3. **An art style** chosen for the issue. See [choosing an art style](https://help.comicink.ai/en/article/choosing-an-art-style-2ctuxj/).

If a page references a character you haven't defined, the AI will improvise — and you'll likely get inconsistent results across pages.

## "Create the cast first" — why a page won't render yet

When you ask **Sidekick** to generate a page (or **Generate All Pages**), it first checks that every character and asset the script names on those pages actually has artwork. If any is missing, Sidekick **won't render yet** — instead it opens a **Create the cast** card for each one:

- A character or prop that **exists but has no image** opens in its editor so you can review it and **Save & Regenerate** its art (10 credits each).
- A name the script mentions that **doesn't exist as a character/asset yet** opens a blank editor so you can create it.

As soon as the missing art finishes, Sidekick **automatically continues** and renders the page(s) you asked for. If one image fails, Sidekick re-opens just that one rather than rendering without it.

Why: a page generated without a character's or prop's reference image makes the AI *invent* how they look — so they'd come out as a stranger, different from the rest of your comic. Generating the art first keeps everyone consistent across every page.

You can always define characters and assets ahead of time (see [defining characters](https://help.comicink.ai/en/article/defining-characters-1913leo/)) so there's nothing to create at render time.

## How generation works

When you click generate on a page, here's what happens behind the scenes:

1. The AI reads the synopsis and figures out what happens on this page.
2. It identifies which characters appear and pulls in their avatars as visual references.
3. It composes a panel layout (typically 1–6 panels per page depending on the story's pacing).
4. It generates the page image, places dialogue and narration, and saves it.

Most pages finish in **under a minute**. Complex pages or busy times of day can take a few minutes longer.

## Polling and notifications

While the page is generating, the editor shows a progress indicator. You can:

- Wait on the page (it auto-updates when ready)
- Navigate elsewhere — your generation continues in the background
- **On iOS**, get a push notification when a page finishes (web doesn't push)

If a generation takes more than ~10 minutes, it's considered timed out. You'll see an error and your credits are automatically refunded.

## Generating multiple pages at once

Each page is generated independently. You can queue several to generate in parallel, or click **Generate All Pages** in the Tools rail to generate every page (and the cover) that doesn't have art yet — the editor will process them and show each page when it's ready.

## What if a page doesn't look right?

You can:

- **Edit the dialogue / narration text** without regenerating the image (free) — see [editing dialogue](https://help.comicink.ai/en/article/editing-dialogue-and-narration-w6qfxa/).
- **Regenerate just one panel** within the page — 50 credits.
- **Regenerate the whole page** — 50 credits, generates a new image from scratch.

See [regenerating images](https://help.comicink.ai/en/article/regenerating-images-when-something-looks-wrong-eytkm/) for the details.

## Languages

Pages are generated in the language you set on the issue. The dialogue and narration are written in that language, and any in-image text (signs, captions) renders in that language too. To translate an issue to another language, see [translating your comic](https://help.comicink.ai/en/article/translating-your-comic-ryc8pm/).

## Common issues

- **Character looks wrong / inconsistent**: make sure the character has a defined avatar and the AI knows them by name from the synopsis. Regenerate the page.
- **Wrong number of panels**: panel count is decided by the AI based on what fits the story. You can edit the page after generation to remove or add panels.
- **Generation failed with "content moderation" error**: the synopsis or character description triggered the safety filter. Edit the offending text and try again. Failed generations don't deduct credits.
